About Flora & Fauna Kids
In 2007, Flora & Fauna Kids began in a spare bedroom of a Richmond, Virginia home, surrounded by an ever-expanding collection of fabrics. Before long, with our living space bursting at the seams, we were thrilled to move to a dedicated neighborhood workspace. What started as a quiet shop on Etsy has grown into a bustling creative hub, but our commitment to slow, authentic craftsmanship remains the same.
Cutting and sewing every garment entirely in-house allows us to maintain absolute quality. Equipped with a sixteen-foot cutting table, two single-needle machines, an overlock, and a dedicated buttonholer, our workspace is fully set up to bring our storybook designs to life. This meticulous process is supported by a brilliant local seamstress and a rotating roster of paid interns from the university fashion department, whom we love mentoring. We are proud to create in a shared building where we work alongside a pottery maker (complete with a kiln in the basement) and a visual artist.
My own journey with a needle and thread began when I learned to sew from my mother. Although I actually hold a degree in Russian Area Studies rather than design, my background in Soviet history did instill a deep appreciation for classic folklore, rich storytelling, and exceptionally durable winter wear.
While we stock a selection of ready-to-ship treasures, many of our signature car seat ponchos and special garments are made to order, lovingly crafted specifically for your child. Having your piece created individually means we can offer limited, thoughtful customization to ensure a perfect match for daily adventures. We welcome unique custom requests when the production schedule allows. Please send us a message to request a customization or a completely custom order.
We make it a point to recycle everything we possibly can in our daily operations, from office paper down to the tiniest fabric scraps left over from our cutting table. To ensure your little adventurer can play without worry, we pre-wash many of our fabrics so you do not have to fret over shrinkage, and we prioritize deadstock, vintage, and upcycled materials. Walking to the studio every morning is my personal daily ritual (meaning one less car on the road), and I can often be seen walking with my big blue Ikea bag to drop our finished packages off at the neighborhood post office.
When you order from us, you are connecting directly with real people who love what they do, rather than an anonymous drop-shipping warehouse. You can always buy with complete confidence, as our handmade goods are fully guaranteed and can be returned for any reason.
